I demo'ed the game in fourteen two-hour sessions.... The components to the game are very solid..... that's the first thing that will catch a gamer's eye... the money being the sweetheart of it all.... some countries would be jealous of such currency...

For players familiar with the game, it will take about two hours... I suspect new player will take three or four... The set-up is somewhat complicated, but allows for streamlined play...

There are methods for selecting captains, ships, and starting locations..... Morality is a consideration, as players are encouraged to "Aim to Misbehave"; in this game there is a clear difference between immoral and illegal, though some actions in the game require both immoral and illegal action  .

Players of the demos thwarted the semi-random consequences of the Reaver and Alliance ships, by sending it out of contentious areas and therefore, out of play :| . We did have one group that did the opposite, the Reavers killed thirty-six passengers and crew in one game  .

You Fly, Buy, Work or Deal as your actions in the game; you get to perform two actions in your turn, though you cannot do the same action twice....

You travel through the Verse to hire crews and acquire equipment, deal with Patrons to get jobs. travel to perform these jobs... the legal ones are generally easy, but do not pay well... Illegal jobs are risky, and difficult and frequently immoral.... but pay well, often very well.... Do not forget, your crew get their cut of the action, or they'll get disgruntled; if they are moral, forced to do immoral acts, they get disgruntled.... disgruntle them twice, they walk away..... It is possible for the Captain to get disgruntled, if he gets disgruntled twice, he fires the crew!!!!

It is advised to acquire a plastic toy dinosaur for game play as it is a crucial element to the game.... a cardboard substitute is included, though the designers reccomend the replacement....

There is a little bit of news on the Firefly Front, first, they have a dedicated and hopefully expanding website: http://www.fireflythegame.com/

Breakin' the Atmo will be released sometime in December, a 50-card supplement to the game:

Wash's dinosaurs are a fixture of Serenity's bridge. Keeping him company as he navigates the 'Verse, the dinos are always lurking in the background, visible in the frame from time to time. In Firefly: The Game, we've included a cardboard dinosaur token to indicate whose turn it is. While the cardboard token is cool, we know gamers everywhere will want to spice up their game by using their own shiny dinosaur toys!

Post a picture showing off what you are using as a custom dinosaur token for Firefly: The Game and receive a "Wash's Lucky Dinosaurs" promo card absolutely free! Shiny! Be creative! Document a sudden but inevitable betrayal, or show us your crew playing Firefly: The Game with your lucky dinosaur.

A new Story Card designed for beginners...... would have been handy for the Demos at Gen Con

I haven't picked up the previous addition; at a mere $12.00, I just have to show up at the Game Shop

The newer supplement seems very intriguing.......

Pirates & Bounty Hunters, the first Game Expansion for Firefly: The Game, introduces a heavy dose of player-versus-player interaction to the ‘Verse. Raid rivals’ ships with piracy jobs. Hunt down wanted fugitives and collect bounties. Ready your crew for showdowns with brand new supply cards! Explore the ’Verse with two new ships. Aggressive new leaders specialize in anti-social strategies while Lawmen reward those bringing justice to the ’Verse.

I saw my first game of this down the club this Monday and I was amazed at the shear quantity of cards that were needed, but it did all seem to work quite well.

It does look as if you have to be disciplined when you finish, and leave at least 20 minutes for clear up after.

It tears down easier than it sets up.... for our demos, we had to re-set them up quickly.... it is worth the effort...

I made it to my LGS and picked up Breakin' Atmo .... it is essentially a pack of cards.... but it makes minor adjustments to the play....making it a little more ruthless....

And I'm going to step on Frizzen's toes, as I actually picked up the Pirates and Bounty Hunters addition before he did...Oh and didn't I mention I picked up the game myself, my first board game purchase in many years. I'll have to get it set up for a solo game, or at least see if we can set up a session at Frizzen's place.

So P&BH does add a new level to the game, before, it seems everyone wants to play it nice, and stay out of the other players way and trying to keep the Reavers away from everyone else. Now with the addition you can undertake missions to steal goods from other players, or have members of their crew, detained. GF9 has added two ships, beyond the Fireflys in the initial game. One of the ships is a freighter, perfect for hauling the cargo you take from the other players, the other is a sleek, fast ship that'll let you chase down other ships and grab whatever crews have a warrant out on them. A lot of the new missions involve stealing goods from other players, for the more disreputable clients, but a lot of bounty hunting for the Alliance client.

How does it play...I don't know yet but I'm willing to set the game up sometime soon.
All the best freaks are here, stop staring at me!

I told my son to look it over; he gave me a non-committal nod..... later he came back with some enthusiasm.... the addition of the Bounty Hunter, "Jubal Early" and his ship (one of the more notorious episodes) has him eager to play.

The rules are available at the Gale Force Nine website.....
