Franks 2017 reading challenge log

Postby Frank » Tue Jan 10, 2017 3:59 pm

I started the new year with about 100 pages to go on Linda La Plante`s prequel to the Prime Suspect series so I don`t think I can claim this one. A good book which I really enjoyed but it did seem kind of flat, though I don`t usually like prequels as you already know where you are going.

This means I can start my log on a high. A book I have been waiting for for ages.

Book 1.

The Sixth Idea.
by PJ Tracy.

This is a really good series from a mother and daughter writing team about a great group of quirky characters. This is the seventh book and they just get better.

Book 2.

The Odin Mission, by James Holland.

Holland is one of the growing list of historians turned writers, and he is not bad. He does not have the storytelling ability of people like Cornwell or Robert Fabbri but he does a decent job. Set during the Norway campaign this is the first in the series though I have previously read book 3, Blood of Honour which I did not think was as good.

Book 3.

Winter`s Fire. by Giles Kristian.

A writer I really like, this is the second book in a prequel trilogy to his Raven series. Being a prequel does take some of the suspense out of it as you do know who survives and some of what happens but it is so good that that does not really matter.

I love his Viking books but I have tried his ECW book and was not so impressed.

Book 4.

Poseidon`s Spear. B Christian Cameron

Next book up is another Taylor Anderson.

This guy really knows his subject, being a reenactor

as well as an ex naval man so his battle scenes are spot on while his storytelling is some of the best.

Really liked Storm Surge, it is starting to fill in a bit more of the Grik background and bringing in some new factions.

Book 9.

The Great King, by Christian Cameron.

Fourth in this very good series, it takes us through the Greeks failed attempts to forstall war with Persia and takes us up to Leaonidas`s stand with his 300 Spartans.

It actually explains the Greeks extremely disfunctional politics in an interesting way that even I could understand.
