I'll be going through Warfighter step-by-step, from components to play. I'll be doing this from the perspective of someone just opening the box and working through a first game, figuring out the rules.

I was lucky enough to score a copy of the Warfighter, Combo Pack, through the generocity of Dan Verssen, at DVG! I've been wanting to play this game for awhile now, and had drooled over it during the original Kickstarter Campaign.

What a beautiful game this is, too! Playable solitaire, or with other players participating as a team against the AI, this looks right up the alley of satisfying my recent itch for Modern Warfare ...a subject I've rarely venture into!!!

(Sorry for the crappy images...thank Apple for the lousy iPad camera!)

The 4-countersheets that come with the game are Top Rate....I mean, THE BEST I have ever seen come with a wargame. All but one popped out easily and undamaged (I've got Gorilla Fingers, so there you go!)....a little Elmer's glue will patch up the one that went astray. For now, I placed them in a spare 16-count Avalon Hill counter tray, and the counters fit in, organized perfectly. The wells are a little shallow, and they always are; however, Dan sells DVG counter trays that are deeper-welled, and I'll be buying some, soon!!!

OK...been awhile, working with other systems, but back to the Warfighter Modern Tactical Special Forces Card Game action! :D

The first part of the rules talk about "Preparing to Play a Game", and has us organize the Core games' cards, which come in four decks....

The first two decks, starting with the first card of the Core game series breaks down like this (list followed by picture)...

The first deck (shown left, above) has the following cards in the deck:
  • Soldier Card, cards 001 - 015
  • Mission Card (Middle East), cards 016 - 019
  • Mission Card (Jungle), cards 020 - 022
  • Objective Card (Middle East), cards 023 - 026
  • Objective Card (Jungle), cards 027 - 029
  • Action Deck, cards cards 030 - 060;

The second deck (from left, shown above) has
  • Action Deck cards cards 061 - 120

Next on your 'To-Do' list is to separate out the Location cards. These are hidden in the Action Deck cards.....

OK...so we're getting there! :D

Action Deck on the Tactical Display Mat, as well as the Jungle Cartel Hostile Deck....

Setup, so far


The first thing I had t do was pick a Mission card from tthat small deck (other cards placed aside). My random mission pick was "Sweep"....

So, based on that Mission card, I now know:

  • The name of the mission, "Sweep";
  • Where on the globe it is transpiring, in this mission it's taking place in the Jungle;
  • The Entrance Cost, for this mission being 0. This is the number of Action Cards each soldier must discard to Enter the Location (card);
  • My Resources, which is 85... This being the number of Resource Points (RPs) I have in order to build (construct) my team and equip them for my mission;
  • The Time given as 17 Turns (number of game turns). I have to complete the mission within this operational limit;
  • Objective, in which I will place my OBJECTIVE CARD, on the Tactical Display Sheets', Mission Path;
  • I will have a Loadout of -0, which is a number subtracted from my loadout limit of the Player Soldier;
  • To the right of the last five items would have been any Special Notes...kinda like SSR's in other .

This Mission card for "Sweep" goes on the Mission card space at the bottom left side of the tactical Display Sheet....

Next, I place the Time Counter on the Tactical Display Sheet's, Mission Timer track; for the mission "Sweep", that's on #17 (per the Mission card)....

Then, I randomly select an Objective card. For this mission, it's a Cartel Boss....

So the Objective that must be met to complete a successful mission (shown at the bottom, left of the card) is to Kill the Boss. This is called the Objective Requirement. Sometimes, there are Key Words, describing what must be done to cpmplete the mission, which are found in the Core game rulebook (this Objective doesn't have one).

In the top left of this card is the Reinforce value, which is the exact point value of Hostile cards that can arrive in this location during each Hostile Reinforcement Draw step....mine being 0-1.

At the bottom right is the total value of Hostile cards that appear when I play this card, based on my Team's current Resource Point Value.

This Objective card is placed on the 8th space of the Mission Path, on the Tactical Display Sheet...

Once placed, I put an Inactive marker on the card....

Throughout the game, I'll be building a path of Location Cards (found in the Action card deck), from the Mission card at the bottom right of the Tactical Display Sheet, all the way to my Objective card on space #8.
