Firepower: Edge of Hamburg logistics

Postby josta59 » Tue May 21, 2013 10:23 pm

Lucky Luke and I are preparing to play our second game of Firepower. I feel like I've found a kindred spirit in Luca, and I'm learning a lot about this game from him. Hopefully I'll last longer than half a turn this time!

In The Edge of Hamburg, a hypothetical scenario set some time in the 1980s, my Polish Motorized Infantry Squads will be defending a few buildings they just captured in Hamburg against Luca's native West German Panzergrenadiers.

Here are my Polish troops and the equipment they'll be using:

Polish Motorized Infantry

1st Motorized Infantry Squad
• Abram (commanding officer), PST4, BDA, BNC, 2xHGN3
• Babiak (squad leader), RFL1, BDA, 2xHGN3
• Cal (assistant squad leader), SMG11, BDA, 2xHGN3
• Dabkowski, LMG4, BDA, 3xHGN3
• Ewy, MPL20, 3xMPL20 AMMO, BDA, 2xHGN3
• Fabin, RFL1, BDA, 3xHGN3
• Gaba, RFL1, BDA, 3xHGN3
• Halama, RFL15, BDA, 1xRGN2, 2xHGN3
• Iskra, RFL15, BDA, 1xRGN2, 2xHGN3
• Jablon, RFL19, BDA, 2xHGN3

2nd Motorized Infantry Squad
• Kabacinski (squad leader), RFL15, BDA, 2xHGN3
• Laba (assistant squad leader), RFL15, BDA, 1xRGN2, 2xHGN3
• Macak, RFL1, BDA, 3xHGN3
• Nabozny, RFL1, BDA, 3xHGN3
• Obara, RFL1, BDA, 3xHGN3
• Pabian, LMG4, BDA, 2xHGN3
• Rachwal, MPL20, 3xMPL20 AMMO, BDA, 2xHGN3

Explanation of terms (Polish squads only):

BDA = body armor
BNC = binoculars
HGN3 = offensive grenade with fuse
LMG4 = PKM or PKMS light machine gun
MPL20 = RPG-7
PST4 = Makarov pistol
RFL1 = Kalashnikov AKM
RFL15 = Kbkg wz. 1960 PMK-DGN carbine-grenade launcher
RFL19 = semi-auto sniper rifle
RGN2 = light, rifle-launched impact grenade
SMG11 = Stechkin APS automatic pistol or Škorpion vz. 61 submachine gun

I also have an anti-personnel mine to place somewhere on the map, and I need to decide where each of my dudes will be standing, crouching, or lying in wait when the game starts.

Yes, this game is as fun as it looks.

Ok Luke, sorry this took so long. Here's where to put my guys (all standing):

• Abram: N8, floor 1, face N
• Babiak: M8, floor 1, east of wall, face NE
• Cal: J6, floor 1, face NE
• Dabkowski: O10, floor 2, inside, face NE
• Ewy: O9, floor 3, window, face NE
• Fabin: I8, top of stairs, face N
• Gaba: K7, floor 1, west of door, face N
• Halama: L6, floor 1, window, face SE
• Iskra: Y7, floor 2, window, face N
• Jablon: M7, balcony, face NE
• Kabacinski: Z7, floor 1, face N
• Laba: AA6, building J, floor 2, window, face NW
• Macak: BB5, floor 1, inside, face N
• Nabozny: Z6, floor 1, inside, face N
• Obara: BB6, floor 1, inside, face N
• Pabian: Y8, floor 2, window, face NW
• Rachwal: Z9, floor 2, window, face NW

And I've written down my PMN1 placement, so I think I'm good to go?

I see the RPG-7s indoor...there is a secret plan or your MPL20 have still the note who reads: "may not be fired in confined space"...? :o

Sorry but I did the same thing (try to shoot RPGs indoor) on my first Firepower game and still remember the shock...

I found some interesting pictures....

rpg7firing.jpg

And some data on USA weapons but the Law72 is nearly the same as RGP-7
backblast.gif

By the way, the PZF-44 maybe because uses a inert mass propelled backward to recoil reducing, have not the same note...(cheater I am! :mrgreen: )

Oh brother, of course...

No worries, those were my second choices for them. I'll just move them out into the trees once I take another look at the map. At least they're not absolutely essential this time like last time.

Ehm...watch out for LOF through the trees... (sound like an annoying univited advice but it isn't...)

I think it's more realistic DON'T FIRE on anyone not "seen" as putting a RPG into a solid wall (no windows or door)if on the other side it is a soldier, but if a soldier fires through a window....uhmmm

I'm not entirely sure what you're saying, but let's try this:

  • Ewy: I6, street, south of the corner of building G, face NE
    This isn't too confined if he comes around the corner to fire, right?
  • Rachwal: BB5, floor 1, inside, face N (just like Macak)
    Rachwal will exit the building to fire.

There's a lot that's unrealistic here, unfortunately, since you have foreknowledge of where all my men are and can place your men accordingly. It was really annoying in the last game when as soon as I blew the mine you knew where everyone was immediately despite it being nighttime. That's why they made those spotting rules that I still haven't read.

About realism I'm with you, the game is NOT realistic in giving too knowledge about enemy situation...if you don't adventure in the spotting rules.

As I said before, the spotting attempt uses action points and so limits the things a soldier can do giving him another thing what he MUST do or die: is the one you don't see the one who gets you.
I'm quite sure that what Firepower needs in the spotting department is a system like the MBT one: the max range to spot a unit change according with the unit's actions; if stand still is "x", if move is "2x", if firing "unlimited"...we can work something around it...because to use the actual spotting rules is mandatory an Umpire to handle the fog of war.

By now we could use the 16.5 (A26) "Written combat Orders" to give spicy taste to street-crossing, what do you think?

And BTW, the confined space is detailed in 16.2.3 (ok, is for the explosion but anyway...) as vehicle, building, bunker, pillbox, cave or tunnel; in reality the backblast is letal if a wall is behind the firer but who cares...this is not a RPG...a line must be traced somewhere.

Scott, I'm finishing with the set-up... in the meantime have a look to the "photo" of the map with Polish set-up...any mistakes on my reproduction?
