My 1/35th German "Super Tank" build.... The Maus!!

Postby TRDG » Sat Jun 04, 2011 10:28 am

Got this "Mouse" just a while ago and opened it up today. Not a game related topic as I don't play 1/35 war games (and there are a few out there..), I thought this might be an interesting Canteen Thread topic. Don't worry Em, the site won't become a model forum/site bud, promise!! So here I am, so to speak!!

My newly purchased "Super Tank"....

A pic of the box, I like the art on this, quite interesting with the background and the camo colors.

A very basic and simple kit indeed but interesting none the less I think.....

Once opened up (as you can see above) it was, as I suspected, quite simple to build. Besides the tracks there really is'nt much to it. Which was why I thought about putting a thread up here, LOL.

Cheers, more later.....

The most difficult part will be the paint/camo job as far as I can see.

A few pics of the real thing, for the most part anyways...One of the two Mouses built....

No camo as you can see and this is the one that the Germans destroyed so the Rusians could'nt capture it intact. Of interest is the mystery of if it did try to get into comabt, but ran out of gas or mechanical problems while moving into action then the ad hock crew destroyed it....

And another camo shot, the Russians did in fact capture to 2 Mauses that were most completed before being destroyed by the Germans. Then took the turret from one then put it on the seond then shipped it for testing in Russia.

A pic of that here

Now back to the model

I put some of the back plate items on the back hull, then a few more on the turret, then proceeded to put the guns together.

The starting phase of my build....

Cheers, more later as I complete more.

Small update

9.jpg
Got a bit more done!!

Well I got the hull together as well as the gun onto the turret and most of the other parts. Now onto the tracks and sides of this beast. I think I will base coat it with basic dark Grey as well, before the camo.

Cheers

looking good mate just one thing about the base coat instead of using dark grey you may want to consider a colour close to red oxide as this is what the Germans used as a primer

Yep, I know that, BUT these guys were actually the raw metal I beleave, so any camo chipped off hypothetically would show dark steel I think.

Cheers, thanks for the comment though, I've done the red base coat on others and it looks ok, but dark grey seems to look a bit bettr as well, at least to me.

The camo pics are the wooden mock ups I think, not sure though....

A bit closer to the finished beast

10.jpg
The base painted turret and the wheels in base camo yellow"ish"

Tried to just paint the turret the dark base color to show the contrast to the grey plasitic, then the wleels with dark base then the base yellow camo.

Cheers

Got the wheels and side plates of the hull on, one of the plates was a pain as it did'nt quite line up, no shocker there for such an old kit I think!!

The Mouse starts to come to life......!!! LOL

Cheers, now the dark base undercoat for all.

She's shaping up nicely, mate! What a beast!
If you can't be a good example, be a horrible warning
