The John Shakespear books by Rory Clements

I have just finished my second of this series and they are a great read.

These are totally different to the sanitised view of the Elizabethan era we might learned about in school, a land where the rich and powerful have complete power over the poor. Justice is in the hands of landowners and political appointee`s. People are killing each other in the name of religion, a situation made worse by the immenent threat of invasion by the Catholic forces of Spain.

In the middle of all this is John Shakespear (brother of WIlliam), an intelligencer for the English crown, and one of the few people in the books who has a moral compass that might actually be recognised as normal these days.
"Some believe that it is only great power that can hold evil in check. But that is not what I have found, it is the small everyday acts of normal folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love."

That sounds like a fantastic concept! Love the premise.
If you can't be a good example, be a horrible warning
