CALL FOR PLAYERS: ASL Academy

Postby Whiterook » Sun Oct 19, 2014 1:55 pm

Advanced Squad Leader (ASL) is the Holy Grail of WWII Wargaming ...at least, for me. Whereas there are plenty of advanced systems of this genre of gaming, ASL was one of the first Big Boys, and continues to be a leader.

A tactical-level board wargame, that simulates actions of approximately company or battalion size in World War II, it is an extremely detailed game system for two or more players (with solitaire play also possible). It is played on my favorite format... geomorphic mapboards and counters.

I won't go into an elaborate explanation, as many are probably already aware of what the system is. A good write-up can be found at:

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Squad_Leader
http://www.multimanpublishing.com/Products/tabid/58/CategoryID/4/Default.aspx

THE SET UP:
I have probably 90% of the system, including a couple copies of the Rulebook Binder (one pristine; and one Warroom quality, with notes and well-worn pages :D ); and almost all of the modules (all in pristine condition; some unopen and unpunched :o  ). Why so pristine?

...'cause up 'til now, for some unknown reason, the challenge was bigger than my current (at any given moments') brain capacity. I'm not saying I COULDN'T learn it; I'm saying I just couldn't sit down and sink my teeth into it. Life, stress, overload, you name it...this is a 'Lifelong System'; it is said it takes a lifetime to fully get it all (if that is even possible).

The Holy Grail.

THE PITCH:
I just recently bought the Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit #1 (ASLSK1). It is just Infantry. It is an easier introduction into the system. With this, you can hit the beachhead and BREAKOUT!

Anyone care to enlist in the ASL Academy with me? ...The goal being, to start a game and learn it together. Yes, I will be playing along, as well as GMing it. I'll use the VASSAL Engine to do a Play-by-Post game; and I'll set up a separate board for the Academy. The rules will magically be provided separately (I'm not saying how  )

Yes, indeed! Sorry, I was out of town all last week.

If there is another seat, well, why not?

I remember only a game played 20+ years ago (I never buy the game...too much for me!) and I toyed with a Brummbar in the street of Stalingrad...using foot soldiers could be less definitive but interesting.

I didn't remember a thing, so I am a recruit !!!!!

Excellent! I know scott's busy over the next couple weeks, so by then, I should have a good handle on the rules and get things set up

Luca, I know what you mean....I've been wanting to get into this game, too, but I'd not been able to devote the time or brainpower to really sink into it. The whole point for us here is to work it out together by playing through it, led maniacally by your Glorious Leader
