Space Combat Mystery Game!

Postby Whiterook » Sat Aug 17, 2013 10:34 am

I've had a space combat miniatures game in development for a couple years now. :o
Yup, this one has been somewhat a guarded secret!

It started around the same time as my Stargate SG1 and Battlestar Galactica homages. I can honestly say that, on a space battle platform of gaming, it is lightyears better than my Battlestar Galactica game, on many levels; but as with all science fiction space combat games, they all share many of the same elements in places. That's one thing I learned early on in the development stage of the BSG game....space combat games share many of the same mechanics because, lets face it, at its core, it's hulking battleships plodding through space and slugging it out with one another!!!

That latter point hit home at cons, where I saw different space combat games play out...everything from Star Wars, Star Trek, and systems totally unrecognizable (ship and combatants-wise) to anything I've ever seen. As I watched these games play out, I saw similarities. It was a curious thing to me at first, until I started to talk to the GM's and observe closely how these miniature grand-battle games worked. I began to see the patterns and realities of the subject...an oxymoron, considering this is all in theory and imagination!

The beauty of this miniatures game is, whereas the BSG miniatures game was specifically FOR BSG only....this one will play in ANY brand or franchise of SciFi mininatures! It's totally open-ended!!! That goes for scale, as well. You can quite literally take any SciFi miniatures and go for it....keeping in mind that it does not play toward any specific franchise. So if you want to play Star Trek, you'll have to figure out the 'flavor' end of that franchise to incorporate into the game yourself, if you wish; but you will be able to jump in and start slugging it out.

And remember this...it is placed in its own Universe!!!

Right now as to where it stands, I am finishing up the final (hopefully) draft of the rulebook; and finished with what I believe will be the final artwork late last night. I'm about to start playtesting within the next month or two...I have a full OOB compliment of BSG miniatures to test drive the system out....though it'll be played in the Universe I created, not BSG

And on that Universe...yes, I've created my own, original Universe in which this rule system is set! It spans seven millennia! The system has a name. It has its own canon. And I've named my game company. Exciting stuff!!!

If all goes the way I think, of options open to me to publish this system....I plan to publish this rulebook this Fall. I need to clear some stuff as far as taxes and registries, but that's all part of the process, isn't it.

Next steps afterwards is: I plan to do a series of scenarios, but in a way I've personally never seen them done! Yes, more mystery!

Fantastic, look forward to hearing more.

I don't want to give away too much at this stage but, my game utilizes a form of Velocity-based movement where your capital ships have a set defined SPEED; but your momentum vs thrust is the way you either speed up or slow down each turn. (Think of a Cadillac on an icy road  )

Running some of the mechanics through the paces, I adjusted some weaponry on the 'bad guys' to bring more balance to the system.

I was just watching the Andromeda series on youtube and noticed the heavy use of kinetic missles, that is a solid mass accelerated to a high speed to damage (force=mass x velocity). This concept has been in sci fi novels and movies for quite a while.
In some novels they used gauss weapons propelling slugs which is aimed )or sprayed ) to where you think a ship will be ( can't be maneuvered once fired but highly effective on incoming missles and lightly armored spacecraft.

What I can tell you from my experience is you need to play test with different groups, take suggestions without taking offense, play test it again and again until it plays well. Then if you want a publisher to look at it, pick one and contact them. Give thewm a synopsis of your game but DO NOT compare it to an existing game. Also DO NOT send a prototype unless asked for. Also make use of any game convention opportunities to playtest your game. If the publisher rejects or ignores you within a reasonable amount of time (give them 60 days or so) Then pick another and try again.
There are some events like Protospiel that publishers attend (you can't pitch directly to them but they may try out your game). There is also a speed pitch event at Gen Con every year.

If self publishing you really have to have everything tested and ready to go., Find a printer and get quotes. Figure 1 1-2 year process.

True....and I LOVE the Andromeda ship, and show concept. But I digress....

The Earthers' side of the conflict may use this type of weaponry in the destroyers to cruisers size ships; whereas I am having Railguns on carriers. The *other* side uses something much like nukes.

My Carriers have point defense weapons which I'd planned on something along these lines.

There are other goodies used, but more on that later.
